2K Hires Apex Legends Producer to Rescue Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Management Shift Comes After Mixed Response

The new appointee steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure updated staff about this decision through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a clearer direction.

The president stated that the developers is now refining the project with a renewed focus, aiming to address gamer demands.

A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment

The news mirrors a similar step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.

Here is the complete content from Ismailer's communication:

Dear Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a message, I stated the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to endure.”

With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The community feedback from last fall’s the game demo was enlightening. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It revealed the requirement for a sharper brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the feedback to mind and overhauled the title with a renewed direction - one that’s positioned to fulfill its potential to our players.

Our confidence in this project grows every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce the new hire as the new Director of the team. Following a period of talks, Ben starts with us on the specified date.

Ben’s leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having devoted the recent years producing and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in receiving Ben soon. We are all looking forward to keep witnessing the development of the game in the time to come.

He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Vision

The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 together with a community playtest. Initially, the developers portrayed the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch states. "Face the rivals with unique powers, stakes, and challenges that change every match. Will you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and hope your squad can secure victory? The decision is yours."

The game has not yet received an official launch window or platforms, but fans can anticipate additional details as development progresses.
