At least thirteen individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
