Conservative reactions to the partial release of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Administration Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But some are not, featuring prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled some rightwing figures to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Response
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing those files for months only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that preceded the legislative vote to enact a law requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy folders of materials that included little new information.
