Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
