Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
